This is a great printer/fax/copier/scanner machine for your small business. It's also and excellent machine for home use when you want something that does more than just print photos and webpages. The print quality is nice and sharp, like that of a laser printer. I know it's meant mainly for business (which is what I mostly use it for) but I've printed some 8 x 10 photos that are very good and I wouldn't hesitate to use it for that. Can you get better photo printing with a model or brand meant specifically for photos? Yes you can, but you have to be really nit-picky to see a difference. Printers have come so far in the last couple of years that this would have been considered an excellent photo printer just a couple years ago. You'll be hard pressed to see much difference. And the instant-dry DURABrite® Ultra Ink system lets you handle photos right off the printer without worrying about smudging them. You know when you print a photo on plain paper how it kind of gets that wavy effect because it comes off the printer wet? This doesn't do that. The colors look clear and natural.
The only thing I didn't like about this printer was that I had to look over the manual to set it up. The menus weren't intuitive for a non-reader-of-manuals type of person. That's not to say that it was difficult to set up. It just means that if you charge ahead like I usually do, you end up scratching your head and wondering why you can't input things like your network password and get it to "take". Had I looked at the quick start instructions I would have realized that it's a little different than some of the input menus I've seen in the past for other WiFi devices. Setting up a printer isn't rocket science. It's simple and quick if you just read the manual. Once I did that, it found my network right away and I was ready to print in just a few minutes that it took to install the software. I installed it on 3 PC's and a Mac without any problem. I LOVE being able to print over a wireless network, the less wires in the tangled mess under my desk the better!
I haven't set it up yet on a netbook that we just got this week which doesn't have a CD drive. I'm not sure I really need a printer on that but of course I'll try, just because I want to see how it works. I'll post an update when we do connect and tell you how that's accomplished.
The fax and scanner thing work great on this device as does the copier. I've copied a couple photos and the results were excellent. You can print on both sides of a document which is kind of nice if you're doing a brochure or if you just want to save paper on a long print-out. It's easy to restore colors in faded photos, to print without borders or to crop your photos or print in black and white. It's also easy to fax a document or photo. I don't often fax photos because it's easier to email them, but it's nice to know that you can. Actually, there a quite a few fancy features like setting up a speed dial or group dial list for faxing that you may not use a lot, but the feature is there if you need it. Again, check the manual for instructions because the printer has its own way of doing things.
Another nice feature is that you can print directly from a memory card. There are little slots on the printer that accommodate a whole slew of different cards. Just a few are: DD, DDHC, miniSD, miniSDHC, MultiMediaCard, Memory Stick, Memory Stick Duo and Micro, Magic Gate, xD-Picture Card (who ever heard of all these?) and more. You can then select photos from the little screen that you want to print. Nice feature if you want to print a couple photos without turning on the computer. And you can print a sheet of graph paper right from the printer. How cool is that? How many times have you needed just a sheet or two of graph paper but didn't want to make the pilgrimage to the office supply store?
All in all, this is a great little all-in-one device that does just about everything you'll need to run a small office or have the small office convenience right in your own home. Two thumbs up!
