Customer Review: Quite possibly the worst printer I've ever owned!

I originally bought this printer because it was one sale and they had just come out with the newer models. I was off to grad school and needed a good all-in-one printer that I could use to not only print out my thesis eventually, but also print out the many pictures chronicling my years in grad school. I should have seen the red flags when I printed out the reading assignment for the first day of ONE class and already my black ink cartridge was spent. I quickly changed to the bigger black ink cartridge but this was only a temporary fix. I quickly found out that once ONE ink cartridge is out, the whole thing stops working. There is no option to print in B&W only, and the only recourse if it is the black that is out, is to use up your color cartridges to make black. So I found myself buying replacement cartridges at $70+ a pop for all four, so I would have spares on hand. This "worked" fine until the day before my meeting with my thesis committee I was printing out my papers and the ink ran out. I went to change the cartridges and it registered that the cartridge was incorrect even though I bought it directly from the Epson store. After an hour on the phone with Epson they decided to send me a new one. The new one did the exact same thing and now I live in fear of the low ink warning. With the amount of money that I have spent on ink in the past two years I could have bought a very nice color laser printer.
The other thing that drives my crazy with this printer is the fact that when one cartridge is replaced, it primes ALL of the cartridges. So if you replace the magenta while the cyan is showing its low but not spent, chances are, after priming the cartridges, the cyan will then be spent as well. I cannot even imagine how much ink I have wasted because of this.
The only reason that I gave it two stars instead of one, is because when it is working it does print very nice quality photos, and scanning things in is fairly easy and does a decent job.
If you decide to buy this printer, just remember to keep SEVERAL ink cartridges of ALL of the colors on hand just in case you run low on one or the first one you put in isn't accepted by the printer.
