This scanner works very well. I used this particular model in an art course that I was taking for digital design at a University and purchased the same one for myself.
It has some really great features that have helped me with scanning and restoring my old family photos. First, the restoration feature on the scanner does a lot of the work for me. The way it touches up the color and improves the back lighting is great. Also the top lid pops open and you can scan in photo negatives and slides. It does a really nice job with these and the plastic trays take the guess work out of it- you just drop your slide or negative in the tray and set it on the scanner bed.
I also like how the back is hinged in a way that if you set something on the scanner bed that isn't flat, it will accommodate thicker books and objects and the lid will rest flat on the surface.
I would definitely recommend this scanner if you are beginning to intermediate level and are looking for something that is of professional quality. If you are scanning photos or artwork this is a must have!!

This is a great product. The only other experience I had had with a scanner was my parent's. Their scanner was a Canon and the software as well as the actual scanner were very slow. My Epson on the other hand was excellent right off the bat. It was easy to set up and it worked about 5 times faster than my parent's Canon. I don't know what people with very specific needs think but for general use it is a great buy.Customer Review: Epson 4490

I bought my Epson Perfection 4490 Photo scanner by a recommendation from my brother. I recently bought my first computer and have a backlog of 50 years of photos I wanted to get on disc and archive. When my scanner arrived I read the instructions and followed them and was amazed how easy it was to scan photos, and slides. It is a great scanner for the price. I would highly recommend it for beginners. I do quilting and use it to scan fabrics for quilting software. Customer Review: Nice scanner, superior quality scans!

I use this scanner under OS X and with G5 and have ZERO problems with it. To be said this scanner is a real workhouse! In my case, it is used in business and it is one very busy scanner with more than 4000 (four thousand) 35-mm transparencies scanned, medium format scanned, artworks, you name it. The dynamic range, density, coloration and overall image clarity is just above any concerns. This thing delivers! i got my from local retailer with extended warranty that I never used. I use scanners for at least 12 years and it is BY FAR the best scanner I ever used. If you do photography (on any level) and you need scan, I doubt you will have any problems with this one. So I guess I'm one satisfied PRO customer.
