Customer Review: Another winner from Epson!

For over 20 years I have been impressed with Epson quality and the Artisan 835 is no exception. For my last two printers, I veered off into the HP printer world. Big mistake. The HP did OK at printing photos, but the ink was not permanent and would run at the slightest drop of water. So when I saw the Epson claims that their prints would outlast photo shop prints, I was very skeptical but I decided to give this one a try based on my past experience with Epson. I figured it couldn't possibly be worse than the last HP printer which never worked correctly and simply gave me fits if I tried to do anything beyond basic text printing.
I was blown away at the difference in the photo prints! The Artisan 895 gives sharp, vivid prints which crushes the best HP can do. And when Epson says their prints can last 200 years (in a photo album), they just may be telling the truth. I took a print from the Artisan 835 and ran it under hot water for two minutes; it didn't affect the print at all. It looked just as good as when it came out of the printer. They don't scratch or smear with regular handling, unlike the HP.
The setup on it was a bit of a pain, but no worse than any other printer. The disc that came with it didn't like my 64 bit Windows 7 Pro and refused to install. I had to download the correct software from the Epson web site and they did not make it ease to find. I had to root around in the site for at least an hour before I found the correct software. But once I found it, it installed with ease.
The photo editing software is pretty basic, but since I am a rank amateur photographer, it suits my needs. It does do a good job of adjusting overall brightness levels of photos which is a big plus for some of the photos I took while learning how all of the settings on my camera affected the shots. The software that came with my camera (Canon) will let me choose the color of the date stamp on photos which the Epson software will not let you do, you get red only. I can't print to the Epson from my Canon software since it leaves black, vertical streaks on the final prints. I have yet to figure THAT one out.
The one VERY annoying thing about this printer is that, apparently, you cannot turn off the the ringer for incoming faxes (at least I haven't found a way). Since this is in my bedroom that is a huge annoyance so I have to leave the phone line unplugged unless I am sending or expecting a fax. Major fail, Epson.
I haven't said anything about the text quality, but it is as good as the photo printing, with no problems whatsoever, sharp and clear. Scanning is good as well with no major problems.
One important thing; I tried to use HP photo paper that I had lying around. Hey photo paper is photo paper, right? WRONG!! You MUST use Epson photo paper, nothing else will work, but the results are awe inspiring for the money.
So this is a great printer and you should buy it, you won't be sorry.
