I had an Epson R320 prinmter which is longer made. Last weekend, my R320 went Kablooie. I loved that printer, so I started looking into a repair. Once they're out of warrantee (I've had mine 5 years) Epson won't repair them but list some third party repair places. The closest one here is in Port Angeles, WA. I called them and was told it would cost $75 plus parts plus shipping. I was going to drive it there, but that's also 2 round trip ferry trips, and you know the drill.
I have two other printers, an HP 4360 and an HP 6988, but they won't print CD/DVDs. I went to Staples and looked at the their printers. They had three that printed DVDs (2 HP and an Epson 810). I like the 810 because it was wireless, but I didn't like the $300 price. Also, all of these printers were all-in-ones which I hate. Then I went online and began a long search and reading reviews. A lot of people have replaced their R200-300 series with Epson's Artisan 50. Reviews were 99% positive. There were some early problems with Windows 7, but Epson seems to have caught up with that now. I finally ordered it last Monday from B&H Photo in NYC. I had downloaded the Windows 7 Drivers in advance because reviewers said it wasn't on the CD. The printer was delivered today and I had it set up in minutes. The installation CD now has Windows 7 on it. Then I networked both my other computers to it.
The test prints were great so I printed a CD. It was perfect, Then I did some photos. They are the most beautiful photos I have ever printed. All the good things I read about this printer were true, and the negative things appear to have been corrected. If you are in need of a new printer, I highly recommend this as a replacement as of this time.
The only con is that it is not wireless, so it has to be connected as a local printer to one computer. Others should network readily to it. I can't comment on ink life yet. I was interested in a CISS, but you have to remove the ink cover which will void your warrantee so it will have to wait.
Since 1984, I have had 5 HP printers and 4 Epsons. I have not been interested in even looking at the other brands. The Epsons are the best photo printers for me. The six color ink, and high quality resolution is a great feature. I use this printer with my AV computer for printing photos and CD/DVDs almost exclusively. It does have two sided printing, but it is not fully automatic and you have to turn the paper over manually and you don't print both sides of photos or CDs.
For General Purpose work, I prefer the HP6988. It is wireless and has fully automatic two sided printing with the optional attachment. It will print a pretty decent photo which is best on Epson Premium photo paper.
As far as Speed is concerned, I only print the highest quality photos so it takes more time and more in. Some things you can't put a price on.
